1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #91 - Aurland Valley, Norway
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #91
(The natural beauty of Norway envelops our bus, as we drove past this magnificent Aurland Valley, which is flanked by steep mountains and natural waterfalls. The title of the most beautiful country in the world was conferred on Norway by National Geographic, and now, we know why, especially during these summer months)

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #90 - Vigeland Sculptures, Oslo
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #90
(This massive Frogner Park showcases the stone and bronze sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, with the Angry Boy being the most famous of all. The centerpiece featuring a totem pole of bare-bodied humans wrapped around each other is quite a spectacle too. Being summer, this place has lots of visitors, attracted by the flowering plants, I am sure)

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #89 - Cruise : Copenhagen to Oslo
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #89
(The allure of the open sea, from Copenhagen to Oslo, came in the form of a 1000-person cruise ferry which is big enough to not feel any twinge of the waves ..slept like a baby overnight, despite a viewless small cabin. But the tax-free shopping and the seafood onboard made up for the shortfall. Can't help but get my "Titanic" moment, feeling free as a seagull!)

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #88 - Royal Palaces, Denmark
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #88
(The Danish Royal family's residences can easily outdo those of the British, in both style and grandeur. Both the Fredensborg and Christiansborg Castles bring such splendor immediately. But finishing the walkabout with an original Danish hotdog is probably the most satisfying, but where's that Haagen Dazs icecream that originated from here? Or was that from the US? )

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #87 - Little Mermaid, Copenhagen
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #87
(The 100-year old icon of Copenhagen, the Little Mermaid, is but a small bronze statue right by the waters edge of this capital of Denmark. Like the little pissing boy in Brussels, these much-talked about must-see's usually end up being a bit of a disappointment, don't they? But then again, you can say that about the Merlion too, right? Its author, Hans Christian Andersen's statue by the cityhall area of Copenhagen had more to see, though )

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #86 - Hossan Leong's 20 Years
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #86
(Okay, so he's not everyone's version of a great comedian but this guy has quite a bit of talent in that tiny frame of his. He's pretty good on the piano, sings well and when he wants to, he can hit the funny bone. At 44, he doesn't look a year older than 18. With this PG-rated show, he seemed subdued and does not have the captive power of the other Singapore sons like Kumar or Broadway Beng, but given that this is his 20th year anniversary gig, this was a passable evening to show off his talents)

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #85 - Kee Heong Bah Kut Teh, Klang
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #85
(This soupy herbal pork rib dish does not come any better than this version from Kee Heong, supposedly the actual site in Klang that started bah kut teh dish itself. After a game of golf, this meal is simply heavenly for lunch. And to top it off, pack another dish for home, but this time, try the 'dry' version. Goodness, what treats!)

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #84
- Pandan Pond, Subang National Golf Club, Selangor
(In the middle of a game of golf, a lovely pond came into view with a most fragrant of smells..pandan leaves everywhere. Nice moment of relief, especially after a hooked shot at the KGNS club. However, a series of good shots thereafter made a game with 4 pars a happy momento for me..it's been a long while since I shot such a good game, probably the first since the chemo days) Monday, July 29, 2013

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #83
- iDragon Restaurant, MidValley Megamall, KL
(This Cantonese Restaurant, actually a chain, serves up some delightful dishes including the long stringbeans stir fried with minced meat. But this time, we ordered the cod fish, lightly fried with soya sauce, and it was a big winner! As always, the meals in KL come with an excellent value- for-money price tag, with the exchange rate still hovering at 2.48)Thursday, June 27, 2013
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #82 - SEA Aquarium, Sentosa
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #82
(With a 118ft viewing panel, this massive SEA Aquarium on the same compound as the Resorts World Sentosa is the biggest in the world. It really makes one feel tiny when we are inside, which in a way, makes the vastness of the oceans come alive. Sharks, rays and dolphins were aplenty, but an 8-metre photo of a whale shark makes one wonder if they were planning to bring a real one in here..surely not)

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #81
(What a buzz for me when the package arrived from Macy's from the US and the dress fits..perfectly! My 1st fashion-buy from the "Fashion Star Season 2" reality TV show became a reality for me. I still can't believe how well the dress fits me..nice feeling to be wearing a piece done by a good designer on TV, from the couch..and via an iPad mini. Amazing technology all around - from seeing it on a reality TV show to wearing it! )

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #80 - Big4 Hong Lim Hawker Stalls
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #80
(These Big 4 Hong Lim hawker stalls - Tuk Kee crayfish noodles, Tai Wah mee pok, Outram fried kway teow and Lee Kheong char siew - on the 2nd floor of this hawker centre are real national treasures. When some foreign gourmet expert from this week's "World Street Food Congress" noted that Singapore has the best street food in Asia, he must have been taken to these stalls as part of his assessment route. These 4 biggies provide a really satisfying 2 to 3 days-worth of meals for me, even when packed for the fridge)

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #79
(The sharkfin soup at this small non-descript restaurant, which is only a few doors away from its more famous neighbour, La Scala, is quite a treat. Coupled with their fried rice, oyster kailan and crab tanghoon, this meal-set is simply fantastic. The tanghoon "glass noodles" with the rich garlic and pepper taste is heavenly - a must try!)

Angelina Jolie's Strength is Amazing!
The strength that Angelina Jolie showed in her decision to have a double mastectomy based on her genetic makeup (her revealing NYT article below) is quite amazing. Would I have done this myself? Hmm..that's a really tough question, and one which, no doubt, would have caused me to have many sleepless nights. But with my own history of ovarian cancer and having gone through the full cancer treatment myself, I am quite sure I would have taken the same decision as hers. She is a terrific inspiration to all women who have to face a similar decision.

My Medical Choice
By ANGELINA JOLIE

MY MOTHER fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was.
We often speak of “Mommy’s mommy,” and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.
Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average.
Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.
On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved. During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work.
But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.
My own process began on Feb. 2 with a procedure known as a “nipple delay,” which rules out disease in the breast ducts behind the nipple and draws extra blood flow to the area. This causes some pain and a lot of bruising, but it increases the chance of saving the nipple.
Two weeks later I had the major surgery, where the breast tissue is removed and temporary fillers are put in place. The operation can take eight hours. You wake up with drain tubes and expanders in your breasts. It does feel like a scene out of a science-fiction film. But days after surgery you can be back to a normal life.
Nine weeks later, the final surgery is completed with the reconstruction of the breasts with an implant. There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful.
I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.
It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.
I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.
For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options. I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.
I acknowledge that there are many wonderful holistic doctors working on alternatives to surgery. My own regimen will be posted in due course on the Web site of the Pink Lotus Breast Center. I hope that this will be helpful to other women.
Breast cancer alone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. It has got to be a priority to ensure that more women can access gene testing and lifesaving preventive treatment, whatever their means and background, wherever they live. The cost of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2, at more than $3,000 in the United States, remains an obstacle for many women.
I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.
Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #78 - Mango & Durian Sticky Rice, Bangkok
1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #78
(Oh my goodness! Can there be a more yummy dessert than these 2 giant calorie-busters...mango and durian sticky rice at Big C, in the heart of Bangkok beside our Arnoma hotel? The mango is silky smooth, and the durian is totally rich with the glutinous rice, but irresistible. Indulging in these 2 desserts may already be worth the flight over to Bangkok..super yum indeed!)

(Riding through the streets of Bangkok in the iconic tuk-tuk can be breath-taking, especially when the driver zips in and out of its rightful lane to get to the destination in the shortest time possible..time is really big baht for him. The sights and sounds of Bangkok streets are a delightful combination, including these monks striding over a zebra-crossing a la Paul, John and George on Abbey Road )

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #76
(This massive reclining Buddha is 43meters long and 15metres high, nearly half a football field in length. Seeing it reminds one of the serenity and tranquillity of the temple. The 108 bronze bowls make it unique, with visitors dropping coins into all 108 bowls for good fortune, with the donations helping the monks to upkeep the temple grounds. Good to know too that the US President, Barack Obama was just there just 6 months ago. A little known fact - the temple is regarded as the birthplace of the traditional Thai massage!)
