(An ingenious engineer built it, and now, everyone can ride it to the Top of Europe, using his railway technology. The train meanders across ski-slopes and snow-laden villages, making it a real joy just watching the winter landscape. At the top, the view is spectacular, especially with the sun shining brightly. At -12C, it really didnt feel that cold, but the altitude took a toll - headaches a plenty! Jungfrau at over 11000ft is already higher than Mt Kinabalu, which puts things in perspective. Being up there gives one a real Mt Everest feeling - until a friend we met along the french highway-stop spoilt it by saying he just went to Europe's highest point at Mt Blanc! Who cares..I was at the real Top-of-Europe!)

(This romantic bridge stretches across the lake, and lies right in the middle of this city, making it a must-see while doing a bit of shopping for the famed Swiss watches at the well-known Bucherer store, just on the other side of the bridge. Pick up a good watch here, knowing it is a almost 30% cheaper than buying one in Spore..that's $600 better for a lovely $2400 lady Tag Heuer..a good deal indeed.)

(Real snow on my face, at last! Yes, the snow-capped mountains at Engelberg was the perfect scene for the ride up to Mt Titlis, 3020m above sea-level. While not much can be seen with snow falling heavily, it makes for a lovely camera shot to be taken. Bakwah from Bee Cheng Hiang was with me in my last trip but this time, we brought Lim Chee Guan..yes, bakwah simply taste better up here)

(2 magnificent structures built by man..one for the soul, the other for the mind. The Duomo shined brightly in the winter sun, while the Galleria stood out in regal elegance, as if meant for the royalty. Well, royalty or not, the chance to indulge in some retail therapy in this home of Prada proved irresistible.What better way to shop than to walk out knowing that you have saved $800 on a $2800 Prada bag. The happy face on the couch says it all..)

(This beautiful square lights up like a fairy tale without the flood waters. Instead the remains of a 2-day old snowstorm was still evident. I can imagine what this place would have looked like when covered in white..a Xmas log cake, perhaps )

(You hear about, you read about, and you see it in the movies but until you hop on a gondola and feel the atmosphere around you, you just don't know how magical a ride it can be, through these canals of Venice. It surely has to be the most beautiful Italian city - and possibly the whole world - on a day when the floods stayed away and the cold winter air was a delight. Follow me on this gondola, and see places, side-streets and bridges that only this ride can show you..can you hear the singing.. Volare!)

Well, it is quite an experience, given that he has no microphone..just the power of his voice. Listen 'live' to the other Andrea (Bocelli) here in a lovely little Tuscan restaurant in Florence..)

(The cafe is right across the Trevi Fountain, and while the queue is long, it is worth the wait. The Italian gelato here is the real thing, so says the local guide with much authority, bcoz it;s her favourite gelato joint. And at 2.50euro, it's good value..that pistachio version is super yum, even at 8C outside! )

(I came, I threw the coins, and I am back! That was 3 years ago. And yes, I threw the coins again this time around too. Who wouldn't want to come back? This fountain is truly breathtaking, not to mention that on a cold winter's evening like what's shown here, the glow of the place is something special. )

Naturally, the buzz in the square was palpable, TV crews and all, in this holy city)

(It was quite a spectacle, this view from atop a hill in Sanya, Hainan. They used the 5 giant buildings sitting by the bay as a giant canvas and ran a series of projected images across them, but which are timed to perfection that showed flying dragons, sailboats and tropical fish that represent Sanya and Hainan well)

(Found - nonya kueh heaven! With enough kueh to host tea-time for the entire Jonker Street vendors, this corner house off the main streets in Malacca is an absolute gem for nonya kuehs. Coupled with new kuehs for Chinese New Year, the place is a riot of colours ..and smells. Almost all I have seen before are here in one place, including some that must surely be 'new species' - never heard, never seen before.."kueh apa tu?")

(Could this possibly be Malacca's best nonya restaurant? Given the fierce competition there for nonya fare, that's saying something. I have to say that if it is not the best, it must be Top3. We tucked into the belachan fish, sotong tempra and the surprise of the night, omelette cincalok. What a blast of tastes for the mouth, indeed. But you gotta wait a bit for the dishes as they take a while for them to lovingly prepare them. It is true that this is Singapore's First Family's - Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Wei Ling - favourite restaurant too in Malacca, as confirmed by the lady-owner behind the counter)

 

(Update Aug2014 - Klebang Coconut Shake

- another gem in Malacca, this one outside of the city at Klebang. Smooth coconut juice that had been blended with ice and served with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. It attracts a long queue, so be prepared)

(At last, after several years of vowing to make a special trip to my aunt's home in Malacca to get my hands dirty with real kueh kapit-making in time for Chinese New Year, we finally hopped over to get it done, sweat, sweetness and smells, all rolled into one full day. Flashes of childhood memories rushed past, and somehow, the kueh always taste better when you know you'd put that effort it)
