(We landed in Kathmandu for the first time, filled with excitement, esp of the next 12-day trek to Everest Base Camp. Once we checked into Apsara Hotel in Thamel, we were out walking along its narrow streets, full of its unique sounds, smells and riot of colours. We walked into one of the many hiking/trekking equipment stores here, filled to the brim with all types of Northface materials, and walked out with our last-minute requirements for our trek, including 2 money-belts. It was good to see no reminders of the massive earthquake of last year here, which means this city has recovered well. A quick bite of the local chapatti + egg from the man on the sidestreet for dinner and we were off to bed for a very early morning flight to Lukla)
