1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #451 - Delos Island ancient ruins, Greece

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #451

- Delos Island ancient ruins, Greece

(A pleasant 10am boat ride brought us to Delos Island, where a huge archaeological site sits, dating back to 3000 BC. Such was the significance of this site that it was put on the Unesco World Heritage list in 1990. The island is regarded as the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. It was once a thriving cosmopolitan Mediterranean port, and most of the ruins pointed to buildings displaying much wealth, including tiled floors that showed intricate drawings of dolphins and a full-blown stadium. The heat of the day at 36C prevented us from wandering too far or wide. But it was worth a visit to get a feel of the richness of the Greeks from such a long time ago, and contrasting it to what the country is today)
