1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #299 - Pompeii, Italy

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #299

- Pompeii, Italy

(History came alive in the ruins of Pompeii, a short 40min drive from Naples. It was completely covered in volcanic ash in 79AD when Mt Vesuvius erupted, killing most of its 11,000 inhabitants then. It was not rediscovered until 1570s, when excavation revealed this thriving port town with its amphitheatres, temples and even saunas. The remains of the iconic Temple of Jupiter with Mt Vesuvius in the background captures the extent of the destruction, nearly 1,940 years ago! Watch how Pompeii was destroyed by Mt Vesuvius in this realistic video clip: click here -  Destruction of Pompeii)
