1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #328 - Upsala Glacier, Patagonia

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #328

- Upsala Glacier, Patagonia

(We were certain our tour the next day to see the biggest glacier here would not disappoint. Sure enough, Upsala Glacier gave us the bluest sapphire-like iceberg we have ever seen, right in the middle of its10km glacier front, with its full length of over 50km. The reason it is so much bluer than the other icebergs was that this was actually the bottom end of the iceberg - it had just tipped over upside down, thus revealing its underside deep blue. The catamaran-like boat also stopped to pulled in a small piece of ice from the lake, which I had the pleasure of not just holding it but also gave it a bite. That was a 300-year-old ice I bit on - it took that long for ice from the top of the mountain to flow down, and then breaking into an iceberg in the lake! What, wait.. 300 year old ice? Mind-boggling! It was later broken up to serve whiskey 'on-the-rocks' to willing buyers/tourists. See the last photo, taken by the International Space Station of Upsala)
