1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #401 - Fenghuang Ancient City, Hunan, China

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #401

- Fenghuang Ancient City, Hunan, China

(Having flown straight into Changsha and being greeted by bursts of firecrackers and fireworks right outside the airport at the stroke of midnight and into 1st day of Chinese New Year, we were driven straight to our hotel. The next morning, another 7hours on the road brought us to this ancient town called Fenghuang Ancient City, a Unesco Heritage site. Described by some writers as the most beautiful ancient town in China, you can see why - wooden homes built on stilts along a river with old boats and water-mills. Dating back to 1700s, this place brought out the magic of this cold winter night. Foodstalls abound along both sides of the river. Crossing the river involved balancing on stepping-stones, with breath-taking views on both ends. It's a great start to our New Year's holiday in China)
