1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #409 - Shibaozhai Red Pagoda, Yangtze River, Chongqing

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #409

- Shibaozhai Red Pagoda, Yangtze River, Chongqing

(The Shibaozhai Red Pagoda sits on an island off the mainland at this small town along the Yangtze, which our ship docked at. This wooden pagoda, dating back to 1819, was initially 9-levels high, built to assist people in climbing to the temple at the top of the hill. Another 3 levels of the pagoda were added in 1956. The climb was easier than we thought, with the cool of the morning providing much relief.  The temple has a stone curved bridge which requires one to cross it with 3 steps, to symbolise crossing into the Heavens. The story of the greedy monk below is good food for thought)
