1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #490 - Curtiss Bay, Antarctica

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #490

- Curtiss Bay, Antarctica

(Our 1st zodiac cruise around this mythical-looking Curtiss Bay was a hit! With thick snow following us all the way this afternoon as we cruise around this bay, the feeling was like being caught inside an icy foggy painting. Our zodiac driver, Bob, stopped to haul out 3 pieces of black-ice from the waters, which were 20,000-30,000 years old - that's how slow the glaciers here move, from atop a mountainside somewhere around this bay. Compared to the 400-year old black-ice at Perito Moreno, these are ancient. Seeing the other zodiacs nearby gave us a real sense of being in an white, wild wonderland. How the propellers of our zodiac can cut through so much ice in the water remains a mystery to us - see the vdo below)
