1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #489 - Mikkelsen Harbour, Antarctica

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #489

- Mikkelsen Harbour, Antarctica

(We woke up the next day at Mikkelsen Harbour, with a layer of snow on the ship's deck. The Gentoo penguin nests and a red Argentinian resting hut for explorers here at Mikkelsen Harbour brought added meaning for all of us because today, 01Dec is Antarctica Day. It is declared to honour the Antarctic Treaty that was signed by 12 countries in 1959 to ensure that no country can lay claim to this continent - only research work can be done. Thus, the wildlife here, including the richest ocean waters here will be preserved forever. The fresh soft snow here made trekking up the hill a significant effort, dropping into knee-deep snow constantly. But it didn't stop me from doing my favourite snow act - the snow-angel wings!)
